The machine has a 1 GB Ethernet expansion card to replace the 10/100 MB integrated Ethernet card. My initial attempt to boot the Live CD of Kubuntu 10.04.2 32-bit desktop left me with a blank screen, the CD-ROM drive stopped and the hard disk light on.
I used the power button reset to re-gain control of the machine.
I have a Dimension 3000 with 2GB RAM, a 500 GB disk with two, 250 GB partitions, one for XP and one for Linux.
Once I ptess F1 the computer starts normally and seems to run without any other problems.
I updated the BIOS to the latest version (A03) and that appeared to fix the problem for a few days then it recurred. Noel I moved your post to Win XP Forum where it might get the most XP experienced viewers (just in case it IS an OS problem!
[quote name='Noel M' post='781165' date='23-Jun-2009 ']One of our computers, a Dell Dimension 3000 desktop running Win XP-SP3 has begun displaying a black screen at start-up with the BIOS details then "Invalid Configuration please run Setup" - then a line saying it is resetting configuration and finally invites to press F1 to continue of F2 to enter Setup.
Once I ptess F1 the computer starts normally and seems to run without any other problems. At four years, perhaps this battery is due for replacement?
